My 14 1/2 year old mixed breed dog is showing symptoms that are really starting to concern me. She seems to get lost in the house, sometimes wandering into a corner. She's defecating indoors, sometimes shortly after being outside, and doesn't let me know - as she used to - when she needs to go out. She has a number of other symptoms of Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this problem, and knows anything about Anipryl (selegiline hydrochloride) to treat this problem.

I have not had personal experience with Anipryl (Selegiline), but this is what I have heard about its effects: it takes at least a month of use to show signs of change; it can be cost prohibitive; like other MAOIs it can cause worse side effects.
I have a 13 year old Boxer who began developing signs of senility about 2 years ago. She walks around as though lost, she stares into space, and she lost bladder control. We decided to just put her on phenylphenalpropanal (sp) for bladder control and have not added an MAOI.
Hopefully someone else will post about their experience with this problem.

Hello!
My 14 year old shih-tzu, Kirby, had this for maybe the last couple years or so of his life (we had to put him to sleep 2 years ago due to congestive heart failure).
He would constantly go to the door and obsessively scratch at it, forgetting he'd just been out several times. Once outside, he'd forget what to do and just stand there, lost.
We had him on anipryl and it really helped a lot. It was expensive; I believe my mom paid $60 a month, but he really couldn't go without it.
I would recommend giving it a shot for sure. It really helped Kirby.
Best of luck to you; I know how hard it is to see this in your loved pet. I hope it helps!!
